Background

29 March 1987 - The Penang Regional Centre of the Malaysian National Computer Confederation was first formed as a Pro-Tem Committee on 29th March 1986 under the then Malaysian Computer Society (MCS). The Penang Regional Centre of the Malaysian Computer Society (PRC-MCS) commenced its operations when it was officially formed on 28th March 1987. The first PRC-MCS Committee members were:

Chairman : Dr Tong Loong Cheong
Vice-Chairman : Mr Tan Ewe Cheng
Hon. Secretary : Mr Teoh Sin Ewe
Hon. Treasurer : Mr. Krishnan a/l Somasundram
Member : Mr Beh Seong Len
Member : Mr Ha Khee Thok

18 March 1989 - The Malaysian Computer Society which was registered under the Registrar of Societies was dissolved on 18th March 1989 to pave the way for the incorporation of the Malaysian National Computer Confederation (MNCC), a company limited by guarantee. Accordingly, the dissolution of PRC-MCS through an EGM on 18th March 1989, saw the birth of the Penang Regional Centre of the Malaysian National Computer Confederation (PERC-MNCC). The first PERC-MNCC Committee members were:

Vice-Chairman : Mr Ha Khee Thok
Hon. Secretary : Mr Tan Ewe Cheng
Hon. Treasurer : Mr. Krishnan a/l Somasundram
Member : Mr Chan Hon Soo
Member : Ms Leong Mee Cheng
Member : Ms Ong Guek Siang
Member : Ms Tan Lee Chin

As a regional centre of MNCC, PERC-MNCC has been actively promoting the objectives of MNCC stated below and organising events for the past 22 years:

(i) To establish and maintain a national organisation for persons concerned with an interest in the application and practice of Information Technology, Computer Science, Information Processing and related disciplines;
(ii) To promote and develop the science of Information Technology and to foster and maintain research and development into the best means and methods of developing and applying such science and to encourage, disseminate and promote knowledge, education and training and the exchange of information and ideas in respect of all questions relating thereto or connected therewith;
(iii) To provide means for considering questions affecting the interest of the computing profession and take whatever action that may seem desirable in relation to legislative or other measures affecting the profession; and
(iv) To extend as widely as possible the knowledge and appreciation of Information Technology, Information Processing Systems, computer-based control systems and theory-related thereto.
