Telekom Malaysia’s Stesen Kabel Dasar Laut Kuala Muda (SKDL) a.k.a Penang Cable Station was officially commissioned on 2nd July 1981 and is situated at 13110 Penaga Seberang Perai. This is the first submarine cable station in Peninsular Malaysia. The cable station consisting of 4 main buildings, is designed to provide high capacity network for voice and data traffic between Malaysia and 51 countries In Asia, Africa and Europe. It is the closest point to India for the Indian Ocean Commonwealth (IOCOM) Cable system and the area has less vessel traffic which ensures that the cable cut risk is low. The cable station houses 3 submarine cable systems. Construction of the cable system marked a major business co-operation between TM and world’s largest 1st Tier Telecommunication companies around the world. The submarine cable system in SKDL Kuala Muda was constructed by world leading Telecommunication suppliers such as Alcatel-Lucent, Tyco Telecommunication and NEC.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 206px; height: 154px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhsl5xw7C6MU7i2-Pf-aXnLbUPXa2p8RNB71i1xFfB1AoGtTaFisUL6EGv0ZOqDXy8PQsx7csbwrgJPyrHz_XjJHV2hXv9YRsooq5SV3SyrzRqYcwxDb8hkqrGLlK4E1HnkFBsKsPjzNnzy/s320/Percbits71.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5484129589085055538" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 202px; height: 150px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjo108dNx-4lrlpNWiRFHtw9ppA6HxTW6v4cdKNVoGELmUnypabf9d5zxKE0gOozgLP8MbNXAOBRG2owoDadGujwkIkT7dT3X_Frz1DNTiD1QV07KpZZ0T5qI67SS_R3oiysUVbZ4BYqm6x/s320/Percbits72.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5484129664678174786" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 161px; height: 120px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhQjHQx_vXz9SxMwrcDZTV76OdAtGWDyVOhzTZJAx6SrCRV4E-cMO9BWLozZjD80rm7Suo_Rv9xld6ge3Xr6gnN_BXYepviMsIAwwhx8rzvvIOCdx1YIF8pijpgeziP5X1vZ-W0v3SSAyy8/s320/Percbits73.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5484130427775961234" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 202px; height: 150px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgMbMmqIC6C4_KPeYYWCGxMwj6dpVDbF1PFiFtUf_9GMBM3_CbFgKtbrN9sPoT_vOJ0dHyIHLJ9s1a_KQG_TdtHYjOGOfLVd06ynNTMHTASEM5g5c5gtjoi-mN0BoLxWl5qTbCqHtm_Gp7I/s320/Percbits74.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5484129759241849890" />

Some photos from SKDL Submarine Cable Station Visit (as this is a high security area limited photos were taken

Year 2010 will be the busiest year for SKDL Kuala Muda as traffic from South Africa will land and go through the station either to domestic network or to other landing stations in Malaysia before continuing the journey to its destination. PLANNED VISIT TO PENANG WATER CORPORATION (PBAPP)

The planned visit to PBAPP’s IT Centre scheduled for 4 February 2010 (subsequently postponed to 4 March 2010) did not take place. PBAPP was only able to offer us a visit to the Air Itam Dam Theme Park but were unable to entertain our request for a visit to the IT Centre. We were told that there was systems development work going on. As the main purpose of the event was a visit to the IT Centre, PERC suggested a later date for the visit. However, as there has been no further development on the matter, PERC treats the proposed visit cancelled. Visits to alternative organizations were arranged instead.

2. Telekom Malaysia’s Stesen Kabel Dasar Laut (SKDL) Kuala Muda a.k.a Penang Cable Station was officially commissioned on 2nd July 1981 and is situated at 13110 Penaga Seberang Perai. This is the first submarine cable station in Peninsular Malaysia. Built on a 2,126 m2 site, the cable station consisting of 4 main buildings, is designed to provide high capacity network for voice and data traffic between Malaysia and 51 countries in Asia, Africa and Europe. Kuala Muda was chosen as the site for the first cable station due to its geographical location. It is the closest point to India for the Indian Ocean Commonwealth (IOCOM) Cable system and the area has less vessel traffic which ensures that the cable cut risk is low.

The cable station houses 3 submarine cable systems, namely the Fiber Link Around The Globe (FLAG) Cable System, South East Asia, Middle East Europe 3 (SEA-ME-WE3) Cable System and South Africa Far East (SAT3-WASC-SAFE) Cable System. Construction of the cable system marked a major business co-operation between TM and world’s largest 1st Tier Telecommunication companies around the world. All parties signed the construction and maintenance agreement before starting any new cable system. The submarine cable system in SKDL Kuala Muda was constructed by world leading Telecommunication suppliers such as Alcatel-Lucent, Tyco Telecommunication and NEC.

Year 2010 will be the busiest year for SKDL Kuala Muda as traffic from South Africa will land and go through the station either to domestic network or to other landing stations in Malaysia before continuing the journey to its destination. The total capacity landed in Kuala Muda Cable Station is 500Gbps which is equivalent to 6.04 million simultaneous calls. The existence of better communication facilities caters for the increasing demand for high bandwidth which could help to attract potential investors, especially multinational companies.

Participants will also have a first hand look of the physical set up of the SKDL station. Details of the visit are as follows:

Venue : TM Submarine Cable Services, Stesen Kabel Dasar Laut Kuala
Muda, Telekom Malaysia 13110 Penaga, Seberang Perai.
Date : Thursday, 27 May 2010
Time : 0930 hrs (9.30 a.m.) – 1130 hrs (11.30 a.m.)

However for security purposes, participants are required to meet at entrance to the station @ 0915 hrs (9.15 a.m.) sharp to obtain security clearance before entering the premises. This is a good opportunity for members to familiarise themselves with state-of-the art communication systems and solutions to be more productive and efficient.

Cost: Attendance is FREE! It can also serve as an effective tool for interaction between PERC and other members of the ICT fraternity in government; MNI's & SME's; institutions of higher learning; health care institutions, etc.

I would like to appeal to members to support the activities of PERC for it to remain a viable and useful organisation for ICT professionals. We hope members will also contribute ideas and suggestions for activities. PERC like any other organisation, is a grouping of members and it is important that it receives the support of its members for its continued success. The support of members will go a long way in the implementation of the expansion plans of PERC-MNCC.

Ask not what PERC can do for you, ask what you can do for PERC.
- borrowing from a famous quote of the late President John F.
