I refer to my earlier notifications dated 15th May 2010 and 5th June 2010 regarding the PERC-MNCC AGM scheduled for 19th June 2010 @ 4.30pm at Bangunan MAKSAK (formerly Kelab Ilham), 225 Jalan Macalister, Pulau Pinang.

This is to inform you that, for reasons beyond the control of PERC-MNCC, the venue has now been changed to Sri Inten, Level 2, Bayview Georgetown Hotel with the concurrence of our HQ. PERC-MNCC VISIT NO. 2 of 2010 – PROFESSIONAL VISIT TO VISIT TO TELEKOM MALAYSIA’s SUBMARINE CABLE STATION AT KUALA MUDA, PENANG

PERC-MNCC organised a professional visit to Telekom Malaysia’s (TM) Submarine Cable Station situated in Kuala Muda on the mainland on 27 May 2010 from 9.30 am to 11.30 am. Telekom Malaysia’s Stesen Kabel Dasar Laut Kuala Muda (SKDL) a.k.a Penang Cable Station was officially commissioned on 2nd July 1981 and is situated at 13110 Penaga Seberang Perai. This is the first submarine cable station in Peninsular Malaysia. The cable station consisting of 4 main buildings, is designed to provide high capacity network for voice and data traffic between Malaysia and 51 countries In Asia, Africa and Europe. It is the closest point to India for the Indian Ocean Commonwealth (IOCOM) Cable system and the area has less vessel traffic which ensures that the cable cut risk is low. The cable station houses 3 submarine cable systems. Construction of the cable system marked a major business co-operation between TM and world’s largest 1st Tier Telecommunication companies around the world. The submarine cable system in SKDL Kuala Muda was constructed by world leading Telecommunication suppliers such as Alcatel-Lucent, Tyco Telecommunication and NEC.

Year 2010 will be the busiest year for SKDL Kuala Muda as traffic from South Africa will land and go through the station either to domestic network or to other landing stations in Malaysia before continuing the journey to its destination. The total capacity landed in Kuala Muda Cable Station is 500Gbps which is equivalent to 6.04 million simultaneous calls. A total of 18 participants, a majority from USM and RECSAM attended this visit. They found the visit very interesting, educational and informative. The Station Manager delivered a very informative and knowledgeable presentation and responded to all questions from participants. PERC is very appreciative of the warm hospitality accorded to participants including catchy TM souvenirs and tasty snacks. A letter of appreciation has been sent to GM, TM Pulau Pinang and Station Manager.

PLANNED PERC ACTIVITIES FOR 2010 (Update)

1. PLANNED VISIT TO PENANG WATER CORPORATION (PBAPP)

The planned visit to PBAPP’s IT Centre scheduled for 4 February 2010 (subsequently postponed to 4 March 2010) did not take place. PBAPP was only able to offer us a visit to the Air Itam Dam Theme Park but were unable to entertain our request for a visit to the IT Centre. We were told that there was systems development work going on. As the main purpose of the event was a visit to the IT Centre, PERC suggested a later date for the visit. However, as there has been no further development on the matter, PERC treats the proposed visit cancelled. Visits to alternative organizations were arranged instead.

2. PERC-MNCC VISIT NO. 2 of 2010 – PROFESSIONAL VISIT TO VISIT TO TELEKOM MALAYSIA’s SUBMARINE CABLE STATION AT KUALA MUDA

PERC-MNCC TALK TO INTI INTERNATIONAL COLLEGE STUDENTS

At the request of the Head of IT of INTI International College a talk was given to their IT Students on the role of PERC and its parent body (MNCC) on 14 March 2010 at the INTI Campus. The talk which was attended by students and lecturers was given by Chairman and Vice Chairman. At the end of the talk, membership forms were distributed to students. PERC has been informed that the College has approved in principle to subsidise the students’ membership fees. Currently the student membership fee is RM20.00 annually. PERC intends to extend this effort to other colleges in due course.

PERC-MNCC VISIT NO. 1 of 2010 – PROFESSIONAL VISIT TO DELL MALAYSIA

PERC-MNCC organised a professional visit to Dell Malaysia situated in Bukit Minyak, Seberang Perai on 25th March 2010. The visit was a huge success with 60 participants from various organisations. Dell is reputed to be the world's leading computer systems company, with annual global revenues of US$52.8 billion. The company is also a premier provider of products and services required for customers to build their information-technology and internet infrastructures. The company is a leading supplier of servers and computer products to business customers, government agencies, educational institutions and consumers. The PC maker has a manufacturing facility in Bukit Minyak where more than 1,500 people are employed. Dell also operates a call centre at the Bayan Lepas Free Industrial Zone, where over 1,000 people work. The history of Dell's manufacturing presence in Penang dates back to 1996. The Bukit Minyak facility is engaged in producing desktop and laptop computers, along with PC systems. Participants were also taken to the factory where the installation of desktops and laptops were carried out. Participants hand a first hand view of the whole physical set up and operations of the various units within the factory. Participants found the visit very interesting, educational and useful. PERC is very appreciative of the warm hospitality accorded including snacks at the Dell Cafetaria.

PERC-MNCC VISIT NO. 2 of 2010 – PROFESSIONAL VISIT TO TELEKOM MALAYSIA SUBMARINE CABLE SERVICES

PERC-MNCC is organising a professional visit to Telekom Malaysia’s (TM) situated in Kuala Muda on the mainland. Telekom Malaysia’s Stesen Kabel Dasar Laut (SKDL) Kuala Muda a.k.a Penang Cable Station was officially commissioned on 2nd July 1981 and is situated at 13110 Penaga Seberang Perai. This is the first submarine cable station in Peninsular Malaysia. Built on a 2,126 m2 site, the cable station consisting of 4 main buildings, is designed to provide high capacity network for voice and data traffic between Malaysia and 51 countries in Asia, Africa and Europe. Kuala Muda was chosen as the site for the first cable station due to its geographical location. It is the closest point to India for the Indian Ocean Commonwealth (IOCOM) Cable system and the area has less vessel traffic which ensures that the cable cut risk is low.

The cable station houses 3 submarine cable systems, namely the Fiber Link Around The Globe (FLAG) Cable System, South East Asia, Middle East Europe 3 (SEA-ME-WE3) Cable System and South Africa Far East (SAT3-WASC-SAFE) Cable System. Construction of the cable system marked a major business co-operation between TM and world’s largest 1st Tier Telecommunication companies around the world. All parties signed the construction and maintenance agreement before starting any new cable system. The submarine cable system in SKDL Kuala Muda was constructed by world leading Telecommunication suppliers such as Alcatel-Lucent, Tyco Telecommunication and NEC.

Year 2010 will be the busiest year for SKDL Kuala Muda as traffic from South Africa will land and go through the station either to domestic network or to other landing stations in Malaysia before continuing the journey to its destination. The total capacity landed in Kuala Muda Cable Station is 500Gbps which is equivalent to 6.04 million simultaneous calls. The existence of better communication facilities caters for the increasing demand for high bandwidth which could help to attract potential investors, especially multinational companies.

This is a good opportunity for members to familiarise themselves with state-of-the art communication systems and solutions to be more productive and efficient.

PERC-MNCC VISIT NO. 1 of 2010 – PROFESSIONAL VISIT TO DELL MALAYSIA

PERC-MNCC is organising a professional visit to Dell Malaysia situated in Bukit Minyak (near Bukit Mertajam) on the mainland. Dell is reputed to be the world's leading computer systems company, with annual global revenues of US$52.8 billion. The company is also a premier provider of products and services required for customers to build their information-technology and internet infrastructures. The company is a leading supplier of servers and computer products to business customers, government agencies, educational institutions and consumers.

The PC maker has a manufacturing facility in Bukit Minyak where more than 1,500 people are employed. Dell also operates a call centre at the Bayan Lepas Free Industrial Zone, where over 1,000 people work. The history of Dell's manufacturing presence in Penang dates back to 1996. Plant Tour Guildelines

No Photography or Videography is allowed within the premises of our
facility and during the tour of our manufacturing floor.
• Personal Accessories
– Watches, rings, jewelry, bracelets, etc. not allowed to be worn on
the hands (from below the elbow).
• Footwear worn must cover the heel and toes completely (Shoes).
– High-heels >1 inch or sandals are not allowed.
• Strictly no cellphones, handbags, food or drinks allowed on the
manufacturing floor

General Attire
No sleeveless attire when worn on its own: Shirts, singlets, vests, etc.
• No short pants
• No accessories/imprints of any form which contain imagery that implicitly
or explicitly depicts insensitivity to the norms and values of any
component culture of diversity.
• Attire which do not project professionalism and appropriateness:
jeans/shirts which are torn; clothing which directly allow perception of
internal anatomy via translucent fabric or body contour fit. No
strapless/spaghetti-strap blouse; or short skirts.
• Shirts should be tucked in (as far as possible, even for those which have
rounded hems)

A visit to Penang Water Corporation , PBAPP (IT Centre and the Air Itam Dam Theme Park) has been planned. The suggested date is 4 February 2010 but is subject to confirmation from the organization. Briefing on new developments including the Joint Collection/Billing Systems and Water Management Systems have been requested.

Hands-on Workshop on
WIRELESS THREATS and SECURITY ASSESSMENT
Auditing With Network Security Vulnerabilities

The above workshop was successfully held on 12th November 2009 at the Traders Hotel, Jalan Magazine, Penang. A total of 32 participants attended the workshop as follows:

The Malaysian National Computer Confederation (MNCC) together with Penang Regional Centre (PERC-MNCC) organised this hands-on workshop entitled, “Wireless Threats and Security Assessment”. The workshop was conducted by Mr Mohamad Nizam Kassim, a security assurance analyst from CyberSecurity Malaysia for Wireless LAN and UMTS Mobile Network Technologies. The workshop involved 5 modules: Wireless Discovery, Sniffing & Mapping; Wireless Protocol Attacks Wireless; Denial of Service Attacks Wireless; Client exposures & Vulnerabilities and Wireless Traffic Assessment.
